Fantasia on "Good Morning America"

Accumulated career pressures and private challenges drove "American Idol" star Fantasia Barrino to attempt to take her life two weeks ago, the singer told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday.

"I

David Bowie Denies Lady Gaga Collaboration

Rock legend's official site calls document claiming that Bowie and Gaga would work together a 'hoax.'
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Virgin
David Bowie

Lady Gaga has often spoken about her love for chameleonic rock icon David Bowie and his gender-bending, glitter-splashed style. Last week, when rumors emerged on a Gaga fansite that the Thin White Duke would be working on Gaga's upcoming album, fans of both artists were understandably intrigued, excited and a bit skeptical.

But Bowie's official website has denied rumors that he would lend his legendary croon to a song reportedly titled "Vinyl." The statement, written by the site's news editor, read in part: "When this tall story first surfaced a few days ago it was denied as a hoax in an update to the same article, and we thought that would be the end of it. I guess some folk see what they want to see though."

The scanned document that popped up last Thursday, which bears the hoax-y title "confirmation of recorded music," also lists Gaga collaborator RedOne as one of the album's producers and engineers. Also named on the fake list are famed R&B producer Teddy Riley and his daughter Taja, as well as former Gaga collaborator Fernando Garibay (Pussycat Dolls, Britney Spears). Song titles cited include "Hooker on a Church Corner" and "Scream Loud."

"The rumor that David Bowie has been working with Lady Gaga seems to have taken off," continued the statement on Bowie's site. "The hoax was started by some bright spark or other with the above forgery ... However, in a nutshell, the suggestion that David Bowie is producing and participating in the production of Lady Gaga's next album is untrue and a hoax."

Gaga has kept a tight lid on the details about her second full-length studio effort. In an interview with i-D, she said, "The new album is my absolute greatest work I've ever done, and I'm so excited about it ... The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life — it's utter liberation. I'm on the quest to create the anthem for my generation for the next decade, so that's what I've done."

Though she's had a close, hit-heavy relationship with RedOne, Gaga promised that she's updating her sound on the still-untitled album with a slate of new producers who she's declined to identify.

"I will never tell because as soon as I tell, everyone starts working with them," she said of her new album's production team. "So all I can say is that nobody knows who they are. They're all new."

Lady Gaga Thanks Fans For Twitter Crown

The singer shouts out her fans for making her the most-followed tweeter.
By

At press time, Gaga's Twitter army clocked in at 5,726,168 deep, besting Brit, who had 5,696,275 followers. Just days ago, the chart-toppers were neck-and-neck, with Spears boasting 5,646,028 Twitter peeps to Gaga's 5,635,460.

When Gaga learned she had dethroned Spears, she took to the Internet to thank the people who made it all possible: her fans. In a video posted online, Gaga doles out heaps of "monster" love to her followers for solidifying her digital dominance.

Sporting a lace headpiece adorned with a sequined Twitter logo and an ornamental Gaga-fied version of the site's familiar bird symbol, the singer addressed her nearly 6 million followers.

"Hello world, this is Lady Gaga, queen of Twitter," said the singer, with a flourish of an illuminated scepter and a sprinkle of glitter; a move that was part-Elizabethan royalty and part-Glinda the Good Witch. "I wanted to thank all my beautiful little monsters for following me. Thank you for beginning my reign as Twitter queen."

The singer then wished her Twitter-dom only the most enjoyable of experiences when logging onto the micro-blogging site.

"May you always have soft cuticles while tweeting," Gaga said wistfully. "May you never have carpal tunnel."

The "Alejandro" singer, who filmed the clip backstage at her Monster Ball Tour stop in Tacoma, Washington, promised to keep the Twitter nonsense to a minimum. "I vow never to partake in celebrity online shenanigans," Gaga said. "And I vow to always tweet and tweet again."

Before signing off, Gaga left her legions of viral fans with a few words of encouragement.

"Just remember that I love you," Gaga said. "And love you yourself. Because little monsters, you were born that way, baby. I love you Twitter. See you at the Monster Ball."

Lady Gaga On Sex, Fame, Drugs, and Her Fans

by Vanity Fair August 2, 2010, 10:00 AM

Lady Gaga tells Vanity Fair contributing editor Lisa Robinson that she tries to avoid having sex because she is afraid of depleting her creative energy—“I have this weird thing that if I sleep with someone they’re going to take my creativity from me through my vagina.”

She also says that she doesn’t trust anybody and doesn’t know if she ever will. Gaga tells Robinson, “I’m perpetually lonely. I’m lonely when I’m in relationships. It’s my condition as an artist.” Regarding men, she says, “I’m drawn to bad romances. And my song [“Bad Romance”] is about whether I go after those [sort of relationships] or if they find me. I’m quite celibate now; I don’t really get time to meet anyone.”

Gaga talks candidly about her drug use and recalls her ultimate low point: “I was completely mental and had just been through so much.” She had been using drugs, and is quick to tell Robinson that, if she writes about that incident, “I do not want my fans to ever emulate that or be that way. I don’t want my fans to think they have to be that way to be great. It’s in the past. It was a low point, and it led to disaster.”

Instead of rehab, though, when disaster struck, Gaga “went home.” She tells Robinson, “All I will say is I hit rock bottom, and it was enough to send a person over the edge. My mother knew the truth about that day, and she screamed so loud on the other end of the phone, I’ll never forget it. And she said, ‘I’m coming to get you.’” Gaga says they went to her 82-year-old grandmother’s house in West Virginia. “I cried. I told her I thought my life was over and I have no hope and I’ve worked so hard, and I knew I was good. What would I do now? And she said, ‘I’m gonna let you cry for a few more hours. And then after those few hours are up, you’re gonna stop crying, you’re gonna pick yourself up, you’re gonna go back to New York, and you’re gonna kick some ass.’”

Gaga also responds to the brouhaha surrounding her appearance at the Yankees game, and what she wore to her sister’s graduation; shows Robinson the contents of her bag; explains her devotion to her Little Monsters; and more.

The September issue of Vanity Fair will be available on newsstands in New York and L.A. on Wednesday, August 4, and nationally and on the iPad on Tuesday, August 10.

Brad Pitt: Missing One Chin Warmer

Hollywood’s Hottest Vampire is back, just the way we remember him. Brad Pitt’s beard, grown lovingly over the course of a year, became an entity of it’s own. A facial hair masterpiece that got its own photo montage in Life, by proxy of being associated with Mr Jolie’s chin. E! Online mulled endlessly over its (non) appeal. It was everything that was wrong with facial hair, all rolled into one. Brad’s bizarre beard even made us forget that The Pitt used to make us turn into melting puddles of drool.

And now - Brad’s beard is gone. And the actor does not look like Cousin It anymore. Can we get an Amen?!

Mr. Pitt trimmed his beard last month, working his way towards the full monty. Brad’s in a movie called Moneyball which also stars Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin Wright. The studio wanted Brad Pitt, the certifiable A-List superstar. Not Brad Pitt, Beardo-Weirdo. His facial hair didn’t stand a chance.

Pink In A Nasty Accident On Stage

Thank God she’s ok! Pink had a scary accident on stage in Nurnberg, Germany, that could have turned out far worse than it did. At one point in the show, two dancers attached Pink to a harness and they ran her into a running leap, expecting her to go up. Unfortunately the harness wasn’t attached properly and Pink was thrown off the high stage and into a barricade. The video reveals one of the dancers falling off as well. We hope she’s ok too.

Her mic was still on, and the shocked audience heard Pink gasping in pain, saying, “F**k, I hurt like a motherf****r, sorry I’m cursing”. Folks cheered her on, shouting their sympathy, as she eventually walked back to the stage, still bent with pain.

She couldn’t complete the show and was taken away in an ambulance. She did tweet out her apologies, though, writing, “To all my nurnberg fans- I am so so so sorry to end the show that way.I am embarassed and very sorry. I’m in ambulance now but I will b fine.” She tweeted once again, while in hospital saying, “didn’t get clipped in2 harness correctly, drug me off stage, fell in2 barricade. Getting xrays.I hope it at least looked cool!!!” Once she got her diagnosis, the singer was back on her Twitter reassuring fans with, “Ok all my lovers out there- nothings broken, no fluid in the lungs, just seriously sore. I made that barricade my b*tch!!!! Thanx nurnberg:(”

Her husband Carey Hart also tweeted to a friend, writing, “took the narliest slam off the stage! The cable on the harness that takes her in the air malfunctioned. Drug her into barrier.” He then updated his Twitter status with, “Fyi @pink is out of the hospital and all good. Just got the shit kicked out of her by the barrier. Steel barrier-1 Pink-0″ The singer is one tough cookie, because this isn’t the first time she’s had a bad accident on stage. She had a separated shoulder from her aeriel-stunt heavy show during her Funhouse tour.
Eminem's Recovery Vs. Relapse

With the release of Recovery earlier this week, Eminem is back in the spotlight after delivering his second album in just more than a year. The projects, Recovery and 2009's Relapse, bookend the rapper's return from a five-year, drug-addled hiatus.

The two albums, however, couldn't be more different. Although both chronicle his dependency, each does so in different ways. Relapse was made as Em was flushing the drugs out of his system, while the new offering was made during his focus on sobriety. Also, Relapse's satirical first single, "We Made You," was rife with stale pop-culture references and no introspection.

"My expectations for Relapse were very low, 'cause this is a man coming back, basically, from hell," Keith Murphy, Vibe senior editor, told MTV News. "If you really wanna go into it, drugs have always been a part of rock-and-roll folklore. It's always been a part of that from Marvin Gaye to Jimi Hendrix to David Bowie. But those guys kind of seemed to always be able to rebound from their excesses and put out incredible work and work that seemed like their head was on their shoulders. Relapse, you got the sense that he had no business recording that album, and not because it was a bad album — there was some good songs on there — but you could just see that struggle of someone trying to figure it out and someone that was actually afraid to rap sincerely about what he went through."

Dr. Dre helmed the majority of the project, and on standouts like "Beautiful" and "Deja Vu," Eminem vividly articulates his dark descent. The project, though, was made in the aftermath of Eminem's divorce, the murder of his close friend Proof and the rapper nearly overdosing. The emotional turmoil Eminem was facing, perhaps, made it difficult for him to focus. In particular, the rapper didn't appear to pay tribute to Proof on any of the songs.

That may be why the rapper himself called his last album "ehh" on Recovery's lead single, "Not Afraid."

Looking for inspiration, Eminem reached out to a slew of new collaborators for Recovery, only using Dr. Dre's production on a handful of tracks.

"He was not as forthcoming with his unhappiness with Relapse at that moment," Noah Callahan-Bever, Complex editor in chief, said about Eminem, who graced the magazine's December/January cover. "I think he was still forming his own opinion and sitting with it and dissecting it in hindsight himself. But it was clear he understood that he had more to say and he hadn't articulated it all. So, for me, my personal expectation was that he would create this thing that would be to Relapse what 'The Dark Knight' was to 'Batman Begins.' That was the beginning and a loose thought, and then he's gonna fully polish it.

"To me, that's so indicative of where his head was at that he hadn't sorted out how he felt about all this stuff that transpired during his downtime," Callahan-Bever added of the differences between the two sets and the lack of a Proof tribute on the former. The Complex editor even suggested that Recovery rivals the best of Eminem's work, putting the collection nearly on par with The Eminem Show.

Murphy said, lyrically, the new album is what fans were expecting from Relapse, although, musically, the project falls short of the Dre-produced set.

Freelance writer and frequent Village Voice contributor Chris Weingarten said the rapper is simply back to doing what he does best: delivering rhymes on a superior technical level. And despite appearances by Pink and Rihanna, Weingarten said the album feels hushed and minimalist.

"He's rapping again," Weingarten said. "He's a beast again. It may not be the hottest album. The choruses are still a little corny, but he's rapping like he was in the '90s, when he was doing ridiculous punch-line rap on Rawkus [Records] stuff. He's back to being a crazy wordsmith. He's being very clear and focused, and it shows."

What album do you like better: Relapse or Recovery? Let us know in the comments below!
