How do you feel about the way women are portrayed in hip-hop/rap music?
Are the artists to blame? Or are women asking to be called “bitches” and “hos” by the way they behave?
Just curious—welcome all opinions!
We have, by now, been drowned by the cliché defenses and half-explanations for videos like “Tip Drill” — most of which fall into a formulaic defense of “artistic freedom” (freedom is not an excuse for chaos)
But rarely do we hear the point that these misogynistic videos and images have long been part of a centuries-long debasement of black women’s bodies. And the sad truth is that hip hop artists’ verbal and visual renderings of black women are now virtually indistinguishable from those of the Hottentot Venus from the late 1700s as well as the body of myths surrounding black women’s sexuality which served to justify the sexual exploitation they experienced during and after slavery.
Rap videos (mainstream rap and hip hop two totally separate entities, if you dont know that you should not be allowed to take part in the discussion ) provide a one dimensional view of Black males and females and whites and blacks alike see no problem with buying into those roles, ZOMBIES!!!
all of you who say you don’t care you are the reason that misogyny and stereotypes surrounding the black female figure continue to thrive.
