Rap Music – Men And Women
Rap music is dominated by male rappers. There is no denying that. There have been very successful female rappers over the years though and this article will take a glimpse at some of the more famous ones.
The group U.T.F.O played a large part in the emergence of females in the rap game. Their song ‘Roxanne, Roxanne’ was about a woman who would not respond to their advances and became very popular. Soon after they ended up cancelling an appearance and the people they cancelled on decided to get back at them with a dis song to “Roxanne, Roxanne.” They put out a song, “Roxanne’s Revenge,” rapped by 14 year old Roxanne Shante. The song was laced with profanities and was very confrontational. U.T.F.O. responded with a dis song of their own featuring Adelaida Martinez, who took on the moniker “The Real Roxanne.” This led to many more dis songs and was the first time female rappers were in the spotlight.
Salt-N-Pepa broke out next. They put out a response song, “The Show Stopper,” that played off of Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick’s “The Show.” The group’s full-length debut, 1986′s “Hot Cool & Vicious,” was a double-platinum success that established a career that produced hits for years to come. MC Lyte was another well known female rapper in the late 80′s. She brought a brash, tomboyish style to the microphone. Queen Latifah is still probably the most recognized women in the rap game. The New Jersey native delivered the anthem “Ladies First” on her debut album, “All Hail the Queen,” in 1989. She was also one of the first women to parlay her music business success into being a successful Hollywood actress.
Males will continue to lead the rap genre but people should also remember some of the women that have made major contributions over the years.
