IPad Apps Produce Gorillaz Album

‘Plastic Beach’ is hardly a distant memory, but word from Gorillaz’ HQ is that the animated super-group are already about to release another album, and that it may hit even as soon as this Christmas. With their collaboration with Daley the non-album single ‘Doncamatic’ currently attempting a bulrush on the winter charts, new content from the band isn’t entirely a surprise, but this particular brand of pop rock production music is about to create quite a ruckuss.

‘I’ve made it on an iPad. I fell in love with (it) as soon as I got it’ said Blur-legend Damon Albarn to the NME in a November interview adding ‘I’ve made a completely different kind of record’. Currently on tour with the full Gorillaz music library, Albarn has been using the quiet time traveling between world-wide dates to assemble what he hopes will be the first album created on the Apple device. Albarn has described the album as having a more ‘American’ sound, like ‘an English voice that has been put through a vocoder of America’. Kind of like the first time you hear Hugh Laurie speak in House?.

Albarn is also likely to be drawing on content originally created for ‘Carousel’ the album that became ‘Plastic Beach’. It’s also like that the ‘Doncamatic’ will feature. Albarn has been saying for some time that he has enough hip hop production music for two albums.

So, if you were to start making your next album on iPad, what would you be using? The big name on the app market is surely ‘AC-7 Pro’ which gives a full touch-controlled mixing deck with sliding faders and tweakable knobs. You can also scratch tracks with ‘Mixr’, record to multiple tracks with ‘StudioTrack’ and sequence audio with ‘Groovemaker’. Finally, the tablet even has its own Synthesizers, ‘Synth’ and ‘iELECTRIBE’. The march of technology continues, but don’t throw out your multi-million pound recording studio just yet. The iPad is obviously not great for recording audio, and even in digital form moving the data between the port-less device is going to be difficult. Still, fascinating stuff!
