Adding A Pond To Your Backyard – Instant Appeal
For an instant focal point to your backyard, think about installing a pond. The soothing sounds of water cascading from a fountain will be sure to help you relax. However, before you begin digging, there are a number of things to remember to create the absolute backyard oasis.
The first step you should do is to call your municipality to make sure that there are no gas or electric lines buried underneath the spot you have selected for your pond. Try to stay clear of mature trees that will have significant root systems. For everyone’s pleasure, select a location that can be viewed from most of the yard. For a more intimate retreat, tuck away your pond in a hidden area and landscape it heavily.
Establish the contour of your pond with a rope. If you are using a pre-formed pond the selection will be restricted. When using a liner you can allow your imagination run wild. When you begin digging, remember the plateau for the plant terrace which will be about eight inches down and one foot wide for liners or determined by the size of your pre-formed pond. You should now make sure that your pond’s edges are level. If your power outlet is not close to the pond, you should dig a shallow trench in which you will deposit the PVC pipe that will house the electric cord.
Fill the base of the pond with one inch of sand. Also add sand on the terraced steps. If using a pre-formed pond, lower it in the pit. Otherwise, commence laying down the liner. To prevent any problems, cut the liner four feet wider and longer than the actual pond. Smooth out any creases by pressing the liner down.
You can now begin to fill the pond. With a pre-formed liner, you want to begin backfilling the space underneath the pond and time it so that you are finished at about the same moment the pond is filled. In the case of a liner, remember to continue pulling the liner taunt. If you are utilizing a pump to operate a fountain or waterfall, install it at the bottom of the pond and hide the cord.
Now comes the fun portion – dressing up your pond. Arrange flat rocks along the edge of your pond and include a second layer in a staggered pattern. Let the rocks hang a bit over the water. Conceal your water pump wire in between rocks and place a third rock on top taking care not to crush the hose.
Take your time when planning how you will plant around your water feature. Is your objective to have the pond blend in with the rest of the backyard or do you want it to be very visible? You should maintain at least one side clear of vegetation to keep it accessible. Designing a feature on one side and one end while maintaining the rest of the pond clear is a popular landscaping method. Also remember to choose plants that will do well in a moist environment. In Ontario, Ajax homes usually have extreme winters and scorching summers so choosing plants that tolerate both ends of the spectrum is ideal.
Now is the time to appreciate your hard labor. In most cases, ponds can be one weekend affairs. Take the plunge. Include one to your garden and be ready to receive lots of compliments.
