Hip Hop Music Online

The roots of hip hop can be traced back to African music; predominantly a style known as griot which was used by traveling singers and poets from West Africa, much like the vaudeville performers in the United States. Since the 1970′s the genre has attracted mainstream attention. While most people are listening to the new age hip hoppers such as Eminem, with hip hop music online gaining in popularity; its hard to forget the legendary Afrika Bambaataa, Keith Cowboy, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five who were the original stars that helped hip hop gain the recognition that it enjoys today. Works from these performers are today not only available on CDs but also websites that offer hip hop music downloads

The History of Hip Hop

It’s widely believed that hip hop in the US arose in the Bronx in the 1970s although the vocal style used in the genre was used by the griots for hundreds of years before anybody had heard of rap or hip hop. In its infancy, the style was known as disco rap. Keith Cowboy can be credited with coining the term; while trying to vex a friend who had just enlisted in the armed forces, by mimicking the sound of the marching cadence with the words, hip-hop. The artist eventually worked the vocals into his stage performances, a style  which was quickly adopted by other performers of the time such as Rapper’s Delight and The SugarHill Gang.

However, the term did not gain mainstream significance and was even considered derogatory till it was consistently used by Afrika Bambaataa to define and describe the subculture which was fast pervading the new age music scene. Eventually the term found its way to print media and finally to the Grammy Awards; hip-hop had truly arrived; today, hip hop music online enjoys immense popularity.

What has been happening since then? Hip Hop as it stands today

While hip hop has been dominating the popular music scene for several decades; many enthusiasts and experts are of the opinion that the genre is well past its prime as the lack of lyrical skills becomes painfully obvious in artists who are appropriately known as “one-hit wonders”.

A lot of hip hop songs being played across music channels and radio stations simply involve a chorus repeated over and over again to catchy beats that are suitable for the dance floor. As opposed to this, there was a time when the artists ability to create meaningful lyrics was paramount to his/her success.

The sheer lack of skills has propagated a ‘non-caring’ culture among the listeners; they simply do not seem to care about the artist anymore; often enjoying a single from the performer without even knowing his/her name. Classic examples of this shifting paradigm are songs like “Chicken Noodle Soup” and artists such as Young B.

Fortunately, there is still one place where hip-hop artists do not shy away from experimenting with their lyrics and their music to an extent that would be deemed incredibly adventurous for a mainstream rapper.

True Hip Hop Still lives on Underground!

For true hip-hop fans who remain unfazed by the popularity of performers such as Young B and others of her kind namely Souljah Boy, there are other artists who may not enjoy the commercial success of these rappers but they do offer hip hop in its truest form. The only mainstream performers who have managed to carve a niche for themselves while being loyal to the roots of hip hop include artists such as Jay Z and Eminem.

Underground groups like Hall Hone, Roots and Kidz and artists like Mos Def and Talib Kweli are also right up there giving fans a taste of what genuine hip hop sounds like. These performers are proving the point that industry watchers have long been trying to make all along; an artist has to produce something memorable, a product that the fans feel passionately about, for a listener to actually spend his money to purchase the CD over simply downloading hip hop music online.
