The Beautiful Cape Peninsula

South Africa is an extraordinary and unique sub-Saharan African nation.  Sailors who have rounded its cape know that it juts impressively into the Atlantic and Indian Oceans at Africa’s southernmost point.  South Africa has a history as old as any in the world, with extensive documentation of the evolution of mankind in its archeological history.  In the present day, the wildlife and biodiversity in the country’s semi-arid plateaus, bush, and coastline are among the most thrilling in all of Africa and possibly the world.  Explore this vibrant country, with its juxtaposition of a multiethnic, forward looking democracy and the splendor and community of traditional Africa!

Inside this rough range of mountain’s you will find gorgeous pristine beaches, sheltered bays, and secluded coves surrounding the Table Mountain, a World Heritage Sight. The Table Mountain is home to over 8,500 different species of plant life. Also located in the midst of all this beauty is the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town, South Africa. Cape Town is considered the hub of the Western Cape Province and South Africa’s Mother City. This unique city can be located between these majestic mountains and the deep blue of Table Bay.

In addition to visiting Cape Town, there are other awe-inspiring sights to see and parks to explore. One way to take in the beauty of the Cape Peninsula is to take a trip along one of the two coastal drives toward the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Each drive is dramatically different and offers different perspectives of the land and terrain. To the west is the Chapman’s Peak route. Taking the Chapman’s Peak route will expose the traveler to the Sea Point’s seaboard, the natural wonder of Clifton’s beaches, the rustic Hout Bay, down the cliff-hugging Chapman’s Peak Drive, to the white sands of Noordhoek’s Long Beach. The second path, the False Bay road, heads North through popular sites, but beginning with a mountain hugging  drive. The False Bay road passes Fish Hoek, a well-known family beach, Kalk Bay, a fishing village with both character and color, and Muizenberg, loved for it’s safe swimming and excellent surfing.

After the country won its independence, the minority descended from the European settlers remained in political control.  Apartheid was in place until 1994, when black Africans were finally able to gain full political rights and were fully enfranchised.  Interestingly, South Africa is the only African nation to have a democratic system continues throughout its history, and is also the first and only nation in the world to build a nuclear weapons arsenal and then agree to voluntarily dismantle the weapons and program completely.

Wetlands, Whales, and Wine – It has become much easier to enjoy the spectacular sights of South Africa since the end of apartheid.  From the bustling city of Cape Town, visitors can hike the iconic Table Mountain National Park, and see the plateau’s top covered by an eerie layer of clouds.  Visitors can also travel west to the Shipwreck Coast of the Cape of Good Hope and view a graveyard of ill-fated naval expeditions, whose well preserved remains add character to the stunning coastline.  The abundance of whales is also a signature feature of South Africa’s coastline.  Travelers can spend an afternoon in the Oceanside town of Hermanus, renowned for it its whale watching, or take a charter boat trip to catch a closer sight of the majestic creatures.  A popular trip from Hermanus is the Garden Route, which winds through hidden nature reserves, remote coastal towns, national monuments, indigenous forests, and sea caves, and borders the peaceful desert highlands of the Karoo. 

In the city’s center is South Africa’s oldest building the Castle of Good Hope, but surrounding it are museums and art galleries. The city of Bo-Kaap is known for both its cobbled streets and for housing the first mosque in South Africa, while the oldest homestead and wine farm, Groot Contantia offers a cultural contrast. Through the Constantia wine route, Groot Constantia is tied to estates in both Helderberg and Durbanville by history and the vine.

The hills of Table Mountain or Lion’s Head, located only a short trip from the entertainment of Century City offer multiple areas to walk and climb. Those full of energy and who want something different can examine the animal and plant life of Cape Floral Kingdom. The trails lead to many areas such as; the Silvermine or Tygerberg Nature Reserves, Newlands Forest, the Cape of Good Hope or Helderberg Nature Reserves, as well as other wildlife areas within the city.
